Shirgao Jatra: Safety Over Stalls After Tragedy
17 Apr
Summary
- Enhanced security measures include CCTV and heavy police presence.
- Stall numbers drastically reduced to prioritize visitor safety.
- Over 2 lakh visitors and 40,000 special devotees expected.

The annual Shree Devi Lairai jatra in Shirgao, commencing on April 21, will feature enhanced safety protocols following a tragic stampede last year. Village streets will be monitored by CCTV cameras, and a substantial police force will be deployed to prevent any recurrence of the previous year's incident, which resulted in six fatalities. This year's festival anticipates approximately 200,000 visitors on the first day, with the 'homkund' ritual expected to attract the largest gathering at night.
A total of 40,000 'dhonds,' the goddess's special devotees, are expected to attend. While registrations are ongoing, the temple has already recorded 20,000 applications and 7,000 registered 'dhonds.' The festival spans five days, with subsequent days featuring the 'kaulotsav,' where the goddess visits homes in the village before returning to the temple on the final day.
North Goa collector Ankit Yadav has led multiple site visits and coordination meetings with police and fire services to finalize arrangements. Shirgao has been strategically divided into six zones, with around 1,000 police personnel assigned. A central control room will monitor public movement, and separate facilities will be provided for the general public and 'dhonds' within the temple premises. Consequently, the number of permitted stalls has been reduced from over 400 to just 34, primarily for essential services like lime juice and water for devotees.
