For a decade, Mary, Mother of God Parish in North Scranton has been making summer brighter for local families through its Summer Swim Drive. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the initiative, which collects new swimming attire and essential items for children and adults. Parishioners donate items like swimsuits, goggles, towels, and sunscreen.
Organizers began the drive last month and will continue collections through June. The collected items will be distributed throughout the summer to patrons of the Weston Field House, Weston Park, and Connell Park pools. This effort, started by parishioner Jennifer Pitts' daughter, aims to provide necessary items for those who might otherwise be unable to afford them.
City officials, including Sunita Samad from the Parks and Recreation Department, express gratitude for the drive. Samad highlighted that the donations remove a significant barrier for families, ensuring no one feels excluded from enjoying city pools. The parish also accepts monetary donations and offers free blood pressure screenings during some giveaways, further enhancing community support.
