A Saskatoon teacher is embarking on an extraordinary 1,500-kilometer run across Saskatchewan to honor her mother's memory. Megan Wotherspoon, turning 38 – the same age her mother died from leukemia – began her 30-day journey from Stony Rapids.
Her route will conclude in Climax, a village near the U.S. border. Wotherspoon, an experienced ultramarathoner, plans to cover up to 60 kilometers daily, primarily on rural gravel roads. This monumental effort is dedicated to her mother, Louise Tokaruk, who passed away from leukemia in 1995.
The run traverses four major ecozones and four Treaty territories. Wotherspoon aims to raise $10 for every kilometer completed, with proceeds benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. She draws inspiration from figures like Terry Fox, acknowledging the importance of ongoing research.
Family and friends are providing support throughout the journey. Wotherspoon also plans to connect her experience with Treaty education for her students at St. Michael's Community School. She anticipates completing the run by the third week of June.
