This year, Rolex is marking the centennial of its pioneering Oyster watch, a simple yet profoundly significant timepiece. Introduced in 1926, the Oyster's key innovation was its durability and waterproofing, establishing Rolex as a premier watchmaker.
The Oyster Perpetual models, descendants of the 1926 Oyster and 1931 self-winding Oyster Perpetual, form the foundation of many iconic Rolex lines. While once considered a basic offering, the Oyster Perpetual line experienced a resurgence under CEO Jean-Frédéric Dufour.
In 2020, Rolex revitalized the line with vibrant lacquer dials, turning the straightforward timepiece into an object of high demand. This shift dramatically increased its desirability and market value, with certain models fetching prices significantly above their retail.
For its centenary, Rolex has introduced special anniversary models. The 41mm version boasts a slate dial and a two-tone aesthetic, while the 36mm features a captivating multi-coloured Jubilee dial, reinterpreting a design from 1978.
