A man from Rochdale has achieved an incredible feat, completing a solo journey of more than 4,200 miles from Azerbaijan. Owen Charnley, aged 34, set off from Baku at the beginning of April and has now returned home after 233 days of continuous travel on foot.
His extensive trek took him through 17 different countries, where he faced a multitude of challenges. These included enduring torrential rain, battling searing heat, and even fending off attacks from stray dogs. Charnley maintained a rigorous pace, walking an average of 35 to 45 kilometers per day throughout his expedition.
Upon his arrival back in Rochdale, Charnley described the feeling as "pretty surreal," acknowledging the significant mental preparation involved in anticipating his return. The purpose behind this arduous journey was to raise vital funds for two homeless charities operating in the Greater Manchester area, demonstrating his dedication to supporting vulnerable individuals.
