Downey Jr.'s Whimsical Windmill Home Revealed

Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan showcased their distinct East Hampton windmill home, acquired in 2017 for $11.9 million. Initially a playhouse built around 1885, the property underwent a significant renovation by Fox-Nahem Associates.

The couple sought a unique, "whimsical and fun" residence for their family, consciously avoiding a "boring" aesthetic. The interiors boast a sunken living room at the windmill's base, complete with a striking wraparound fireplace by Peter Lane.

Susan's office is situated at the tower's summit. Throughout the home, personal artistic touches abound, including the "Avengers" star's own bathroom designs and a notable praying mantis statue in the garden. Functional elements, such as a "stuffed" closet and a purple bathroom featuring children's toys, were also highlighted.

Outside, a swimming pool area includes a decking and a freestanding pavilion, which has become a central hub for family and friends. The renovation process was notably swift, with the entire house, including furnishings and flatware, being refitted in less than two months to ensure enjoyment by Christmas.

Joe Nahem of Fox-Nahem Associates described the "insane" schedule, emphasizing the clients' desire for their home to feel "genuinely homey" despite their frequent travel. The transformation was completed in just six weeks.
