Christmas Travel Chaos: Busiest Getaway in a Decade Ahead
15 Dec
Summary
- Record numbers expected for Christmas travel across all transport modes.
- Busiest travel days identified as Fridays and Sundays before New Year.
- Significant rail engineering works will disrupt travel post-Christmas.

This festive season is poised to witness the busiest travel period in ten years, with unprecedented pressure expected on all transport networks. Airports like London Heathrow, Birmingham, and Manchester anticipate record-breaking passenger numbers, with Fridays and Sundays, particularly December 19, December 28, January 2, and January 4, identified as peak travel days for air journeys.
Railways are set for their busiest days before Christmas on December 20 and 22. Post-Christmas, however, extensive Network Rail engineering work will cause significant line closures, including major disruptions on the West Coast Main Line and closures at London Waterloo and between Leeds and York until early January. Train services will be limited on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, with minimal running on New Year's Day, especially in Scotland.
Road travel is also predicted to be highly congested, with Christmas Eve identified as the busiest day for car journeys, potentially reaching post-Covid highs. Christmas Day is forecast to be the optimal driving day. Bus and coach services, including Flixbus and National Express, will offer additional services, particularly to assist passengers affected by rail closures and to cover train-free Christmas and Boxing Days.
