Raulane Festival: From Local Secret to Instagram Sensation

A sacred festival in Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur region, the Raulane festival, has experienced a dramatic rise in popularity due to social media. Previously known to a small community and cultural enthusiasts, the festival, which marks the farewell to celestial spirits, became a viral sensation last year. This newfound attention significantly increased footfall this year, with travellers visiting to witness the ancient 5,000-year-old winter-spring ritual.

Photographer Kanwar Pal Singh noted a substantial increase in visitors this year compared to last year, describing initial chaos on the first day due to the surge. However, the administration and local community effectively managed the crowds by creating cordoned-off viewing areas. Influencer Divya Negi expressed joy in seeing her cultural heritage preserved, acknowledging the festival's increased popularity among tourists.

While social media has undoubtedly fueled curiosity and brought widespread attention to the Raulane festival, this surge has also led to concerns about its privacy. Some social media users highlighted instances where creators allegedly entered local homes without permission to capture content, violating the tradition's sanctity. The festival's core beliefs emphasize the secrecy of figures like Raula and Raulane, whose identities and faces are traditionally not revealed.
