Barry G. Smith, visiting Arkansas's Crater of Diamonds State Park with his granddaughters on August 16, unearthed a remarkable 2.29-carat yellow diamond. Smith, from Germantown, Tennessee, was not expecting more than a pleasant outing with Sage and Juniper when they rented a basic digging kit.
After about 30 minutes of searching in the East Drain section, Smith spotted a glimmer, initially thinking it was mica. He placed the find in his pocket until a park staff member inspected it, confirming it was a significant yellow diamond. Yellow diamonds are noted as the rarest variety found at the park.
The diamond, approximately the size of a black-eyed pea, has been named the Sage Juniper Diamond by Smith in honor of his granddaughters. This discovery is the third-largest registered at the park this year, contributing to the 351 diamonds found so far in 2026. Park officials do not appraise finds, suggesting certified gemologists for valuation.
