Rare Bird Sighting Draws Crowds as Court Closes Due to Maggots
28 Sep, 2025
Summary
- Maggots from rotting seagulls forced court closure for 2 days
- Woman with stoma swims Channel, now leads team up Kilimanjaro
- Breweries dispute trademark for beer associated with Newcastle fans

Last month, crowds of birdwatchers flocked to the seafront in South Shields to catch a rare glimpse of a Pechora pipit, a species that usually breeds in the far north of Russia before migrating to Southeast Asia. Despite the unusual sighting, a more concerning incident occurred at the South Tyneside Magistrates' Court in the same town, which was forced to close early for two days after dead seagulls became trapped in the roof above the lobby, causing maggots to rain down from the ceiling.
In more uplifting news, Gill Castle, who became the first person with a stoma to swim the English Channel in September 2023, is now embarking on a new challenge. She is leading a team of 16 women, many of whom have suffered birth trauma or have a stoma, up Africa's highest mountain, Kilimanjaro. Castle had a colostomy after being injured during the birth of her son in 2011, but she has proven that having a stoma does not have to stop people from achieving amazing feats.
Elsewhere, a dispute has erupted between two Tyneside-based breweries over the trademark of the word "Wor" on beer associated with a group of Newcastle United football fans. Wylam Brewery recently rebranded its "Wor Flags" beer to "NCL Flags," while Anarchy Brew Co. claimed it had registered the trademark for similar beer products in 2022 during its own partnership with the Wor Flags fan group.
