Rare 1900 Dress on Display in Cornwall

A unique dress designed to mark the dawn of the 20th Century is now on public view. The 'Cockleshell Dress', once a symbol of the era, was worn by Mary Vere Agar-Robartes, a resident of Lanhydrock, Cornwall. This exquisite garment, crafted from cream silk, showcases intricate shell-pattern embroidery and fine gold-thread detailing.

Restored by the National Trust's textile conservators, the dress also features a commemorative sash dated 1900. Its exhibition is a rare opportunity, as the delicate fabric can only withstand limited light exposure. Therefore, the dress will be displayed at the country house between August 28 and September 27.
