Qatar's Gewan Island has unveiled a remarkable innovation to combat summer heat: a 450-meter air-conditioned promenade called the Crystal Walk.
This unique outdoor space maintains a comfortable 21-23 degrees Celsius year-round, offering a respite from the day's heat. The walkway is covered by artificial tree-like structures adorned with 10 tonnes of crystals and equipped with solar panels to power the cooling systems.
Beyond temperature control, the Crystal Walk captivates visitors with interactive floor panels showcasing diverse artistic and cultural displays, from desert landscapes to marine life. The island, initially a staging ground for The Pearl development, has transformed into a vibrant destination.
Gewan Island is divided into residential, central leisure, and future hotel and golf course areas. It is designed with a human scale in mind, featuring walkable routes, shops, cafes, and restaurants, alongside a water taxi service to The Pearl's Porto Arabia Marina.
A new five-star hotel and residences, including a nine-hole golf course, are slated to open between 2026 and 2027, further enhancing Gewan Island's hospitality and tourism offerings. The island aims to broaden Doha's leisure options beyond the traditional winter high season.
