Pune Cyclists Face Roadblocks: Study Reveals Top 3 Deterrents

Obstructions on cycling tracks, including parked vehicles and vendor encroachment, are the primary deterrent for 56% of cyclists in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Nagpur. This finding comes from a study by the Institute for Transportation & Development Policy (ITDP).

Conducted between July and September 2025, the survey identified a lack of strict enforcement of cycling infrastructure and rules as the second biggest concern for cyclists at 54%, followed by speeding vehicles at 49%.

The study also highlighted gender differences, with 59% of female respondents using bicycles for daily commutes compared to 41% of males. Respondents under 18 years old primarily use cycles for school travel, with 40% citing a lack of shade as a deterrent.

Non-cyclists indicated that the absence of dedicated cycling infrastructure (59%) and fear of accidents (55%) were their main reasons for not cycling. Both groups expressed that continuous, safe cycle tracks and strict traffic rule enforcement could encourage more cycling.

While Pune has extensive cycle track coverage, enforcement is weak. Pimpri-Chinchwad features visible tracks but experiences high accident fear due to wide roads. Nagpur has minimal cycling infrastructure, limiting its usability.
