This unique settlement, approximately 45-50 km from central Kolkata, is home to at least 100 families whose primary livelihood revolves around making and selling this beloved Bengali street food.
Families in Puchkagram often begin their day as early as 4 am, meticulously preparing the crispy shells and flavorful fillings. Their daily production can range from 8,000 to 12,000 puchkas, which are then supplied to surrounding areas including Kolkata, Barrackpore, Naihati, and Kalyani. The community actively participates, with men often heading to markets, while women manage various stalls within the village.
The village offers an extensive array of puchka variations, moving far beyond the traditional tamarind water and mashed potato. Visitors can explore innovative options like chicken, mutton, prawn, fish, chocolate, and even ice-cream-filled puchkas. While richer fillings come at a higher price point, they remain remarkably affordable compared to urban street food trends, with some stalls boasting over 100 flavors.
Initially known as Shahid Pally, the village gradually adopted the moniker "Puchkagram" as puchka-making became its economic backbone. The rise of social media and food influencers has propelled Puchkagram into a significant culinary attraction. Its proximity to the Rani Rashmoni ghat and temple complex further boosts visitor traffic, making it a mandatory stop for many exploring the region and cementing its place on Bengal's vibrant food map.
