Rakshabandhan was celebrated with traditional fervour across Prayagraj on Friday, with sisters tying rakhis on their brothers' wrists. Families came together to celebrate despite heavy rain that lashed the city throughout the day. The auspicious muhurat for tying the rakhi, based on the Udaya Tithi, extended until 9:47 AM, prompting early morning celebrations.
Following the muhurat, families utilized the period from 10:46 AM to 12:22 PM, which was Rahukaal, to prepare special dishes and festive meals. Many sisters travelled to distant areas to celebrate with their brothers, undeterred by the heavy rain that began around 1 PM.
The festive spirit persisted until late evening, with streets and homes remaining lively. Social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram were abuzz with families sharing photographs and videos of rakhi ceremonies, tilak rituals, and blessings. Those unable to be physically present connected with siblings through video calls.
Markets and sweet shops experienced crowded conditions throughout the day. Roadways and city buses witnessed a significant rush of women passengers. Approximately 55,000 sisters travelled with one companion for free on Thursday, according to the regional manager of UPSRTC. The rush continued on Friday, with around 90 women also taking a free trial ride on a double-decker bus.
