250 Poodles Rescued from Squalor Find New Homes
9 Apr
Summary
- Over 250 matted and filthy poodles were rescued from squalid conditions.
- Many dogs were initially terrified of the outside world.
- Two poodles, Eva and Teddy, are still awaiting adoption.

A significant rescue effort has brought 250 poodle-cross dogs from dire living conditions to a path of recovery and adoption. Photos initially shared by the RSPCA depicted the animals in severely matted and filthy states, prompting disbelief and claims of AI generation. To counter these rumors, additional images were released, confirming the reality of the large-scale operation conducted with the Dogs Trust.
The dogs had been living with an overwhelmed elderly owner, leading to rapidly deteriorating conditions. The RSPCA determined that providing assistance to the owner was more appropriate than prosecution. Many of the rescued animals were taken to the RSPCA's Radcliffe Animal Centre in Nottingham, where their fear of the outdoors was so profound that some had to be carried to grassy areas. Some dogs required anesthesia for shaving due to extreme matting.
Heartwarming updates now show the dogs thriving in their new homes. Adopters have shared photos of their pets, like Ravi lounging on a chair and Dex gaining confidence. Another pair, Stevie (a deaf and blind cocker spaniel) and her guide dog Sandy (a poodle), are seeking a home together at the Southridge Animal Centre in Hertfordshire. While Eva and Teddy remain at the Radcliffe Animal Centre, numerous other animals have been placed in loving environments across various RSPCA centres, with two dogs even joining Greater Manchester Police's tactical dog unit.
This rescue highlights a concerning trend, with a reported 70% rise in animals found in destitute conditions since the pandemic. A separate incident in April 2025 in Doncaster also saw over 80 canines rescued, with some now serving as sniffer dogs for the police.
