Bowel Battle to Balloon Record

Bristol resident Jo Bailey, a former hot air balloon pilot, is set to challenge for a world record at the upcoming Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. In 2025, Bailey faced a near-fatal ordeal with a twisted bowel, leading to extensive surgery and a two-month hospital stay. As a result of the operation, she now lives with a stoma bag.

Now, the 65-year-old is channeling her experience into a record attempt for the most tethered hopping balloon ascents within one hour. This endeavor is not solely about breaking records but aims to raise funds for the medical personnel who provided her care.

Bailey shared that the challenge is a testament to resilience, stating, "This challenge isn't really about records. It's about showing people that life doesn't end after major surgery. It can still be adventurous." She experienced immense challenges, including sepsis and hallucinations, during her recovery, making this attempt a powerful symbol of recovery and continued adventure.
