Summary
- One in three English neighbourhoods have more dogs than children.
- The estimated dog population will reach 13 million by 2026.
- Fertility rates in England and Wales are at their lowest since the 1930s.

Man's best friend is increasingly becoming the family unit in England, with pets outnumbering children in a third of all neighborhoods. This trend, dubbed the 'dinkwad' phenomenon, sees younger couples prioritizing dogs over starting a family. The estimated dog population is projected to reach 13 million by 2026, a significant increase from nine million in 2019.
This demographic shift is occurring as fertility rates in England and Wales have plummeted to their lowest levels since the 1930s, with an average of 1.44 children per woman. Experts express concern that this trend could lead to underpopulation, potentially impacting the economy and the ability to support an aging population.
While cities generally maintain higher child populations, some areas like Liverpool show more dogs than children. The Royal Veterinary College notes that dogs are being celebrated with parties and special occasions, mirroring child-rearing practices. This reflects a growing trend among younger generations to view dogs as integral family members and companions.
