Oxfordshire County Council has embraced a creative approach to its winter fleet, christening 30 gritters with a collection of memorable names. The initiative stemmed from a public competition that saw residents submit over 1,500 suggestions. These "pun-tastic" names draw inspiration from the county's rich heritage, including esteemed leaders, renowned writers, influential scientists, celebrated musicians, and prominent sports figures.
Among the winning entries are Radiospread, Inspector Norse, and Snowy Beauchamp, the latter honoring the late Oxford United footballer Joey Beauchamp. The list also features tributes to historical figures like Sir Winston Churchill and King Alfred, as well as local landmarks transformed into playful names like Shotover Chill and Grittenham Clumps. This project reflects a community-driven effort to bring a touch of local character to essential winter services.
