Orphaned Monkey Clings to Stuffed Dog for Comfort

In Mexico, a six-week-old patas monkey named Yuji is receiving round-the-clock care after being rejected by his mother. Yuji was found clinging to a stuffed dog, which now serves as his surrogate mother, providing essential comfort and security. He was separated from his mother shortly after birth due to her irregular behavior and has been under intensive veterinary supervision.

Yuji is currently being bottle-fed fortified milk and is expected to transition to solid foods around six months old. Veterinarians at the Guadalajara Zoo are carefully monitoring his development, providing stimulation through a hammock and ropes in his enclosure. This assisted rearing process, while popular, has drawn criticism from some animal rights activists.

Despite ethical debates, zoo officials emphasize that Yuji's survival was dependent on this intervention, likening it to a "second chance" at life. The zoo aims to eventually integrate Yuji with other patas monkeys, but this depends on his readiness and successful weaning from his milk-only diet.
