Ormskirk Ginnels Get £100k Boost for Historic Revival
28 Mar
Summary
- Ormskirk's ginnels, reflecting medieval patterns, will be restored.
- A £100,000 grant will fund repairs, signage, and artwork.
- The project aims to boost tourism and preserve town history.

A community group in Ormskirk has been awarded £100,000 by the local council to repair and promote the town's historic ginnels. These alleyways, dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, are noted for reflecting medieval street patterns and providing an insight into Ormskirk's past. The funding will be used for display boards, signage, artwork, and lighting to enhance the town's appeal and historical significance.
The Ormskirk Community Partnership (OCP) will launch the Ormskirk Ginnels Project in July during the town's annual Gingerbread festival. The ginnels are not only historically important but also serve as key access points within the town centre, which is a conservation area. Some restored ginnels will feature information about historical figures and the town's famous gingerbread connection, as well as a purported link to William Shakespeare.
