Hippo Turns 52: A Senior Celeb!

Hannah Shirley, a pygmy hippopotamus, recently marked her 52nd birthday, making her the oldest of her kind in managed care. Her lifespan more than doubles the typical 25-30 years for pygmy hippos in the wild. The San Diego Humane Society's Ramona Wildlife Center threw a festive "Hungry Hungry Hippos" themed party to celebrate this incredible milestone.

Rescued in 2002, Hannah Shirley now resides in an expansive 13,000-square-foot habitat that includes a pond and pool. Her caregivers ensure she receives specialized diets and attentive health monitoring, providing her with a comfortable and long life. This celebration also brings attention to the plight of pygmy hippos.

Pygmy hippos are native to West Africa and are classified as a vulnerable species, with fewer than 2,500 individuals remaining in their natural habitat. Conservation efforts are crucial as their environment faces pollution and habitat destruction, alongside hunting. Hannah serves as an important ambassador for her species.
