In a significant move, the Odisha government has unveiled a $12.5 million renovation plan for the iconic Baladevjew Temple in Kendrapada. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by the state's Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan on November 13, 2025.
The comprehensive plan aims to transform the temple and its surrounding areas to attract more tourists and devotees. It includes the demolition of 47 structures near the temple, with the government promising rehabilitation for all affected shop owners and residents. Additionally, the renovation will focus on constructing proper roads, a boundary wall, drinking water facilities, enhanced security, and overall beautification of the temple complex.
The Baladevjew Temple, built in 1761 during the Maratha rule in Odisha, sits on a vast 720-acre land. However, only 200 acres remain in the temple's direct possession, with 112 acres illegally occupied by tenants and 160 acres lying unused. Furthermore, the temple authorities are embroiled in 120 land dispute cases in the courts.
The Kendrapada Collector, Raghuram R Iyer, has been tasked with overseeing the renovation project, which is expected to be completed within the next two years. The government has assured that additional funds will be provided for the temple's restoration once the land acquisition process is finalized.
