Across Odisha, Makar Sankranti was celebrated with fervent devotion and community spirit on January 14, 2026. Residents participated in purifying dips in rivers and water bodies, embracing the auspicious occasion. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Maji was among those who took a holy dip in the Baitarani River in Keonjhar, subsequently offering prayers at a local Shiva temple.
Thousands of devotees converged at the renowned Jagannath Temple in Puri. Here, the deities were specially adorned in the 'Makar Chourashi Besha'. A significant ritual involved offering 'Makar Chaula', a traditional dish prepared from freshly harvested rice mixed with jaggery, coconut, and bananas, symbolizing the season's bounty.
The festivities extended to coastal areas, with many gathering at Chandrabhaga beach and the iconic Sun Temple in Konark to witness the sunrise. The state buzzed with activity, featuring vibrant kite flying competitions and large community feasts that brought people together, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.
