5 Apr
Summary
- Hats adorned with pigeons, pizza, and coffee cups stunned onlookers.
- A father and daughter duo crafted fortune cookie and takeout container hats.
- One participant wore a hat with 76 real, hollowed-out eggs.

The annual Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival in New York City saw participants showcasing incredibly elaborate and artistic headwear. Gina Kim, a toy designer from Sunnyside, Queens, presented a bonnet featuring iconic New York imagery, including a bejeweled pigeon wearing sunglasses and a tiny Mets cap, alongside a coffee cup and a pizza box.
Kim, a decade-long attendee, described the experience as akin to being a celebrity, with constant photo requests. Art teacher James Haggerty and his daughter Zoe begin planning their unique bonnets for the parade, which dates back to the 1870s, a full year in advance.
Their past creations include a Chinese takeout container and a giant fortune cookie that dispensed fortunes. In a past year, Zoe wore a spaghetti and meatballs hat while her father donned a cheese grater. Brooklynite Jairus Abts, an actor, turned heads in 2019 with a hat holding 76 real, hollowed-out eggs, necessitating its removal to continue due to overwhelming photo requests.
