A 44-year-old woman from Kettering, Northamptonshire, has achieved an extraordinary feat by crossing the Atlantic Ocean without prior rowing experience. Nicky Allen was part of a four-person crew who undertook a challenging 3,200-mile journey from Lanzarote to Antigua. The voyage, which began on January 24th, concluded on Thursday, marking 54 days, seven hours, and six minutes at sea.
The crew navigated the immense challenge using a purpose-built ocean rowing boat, adhering to a demanding routine of two hours rowing followed by two hours of rest, day and night. Their journey was not without its difficulties, including managing boat leaks and a humorous mishap involving a crew member mistaking a laxative for a rehydration tablet.
Despite the gruelling nature of the crossing, Allen expressed disbelief and excitement at their accomplishment, calling the experience "bonkers." The team received an overwhelming welcome upon arrival in Antigua, with friends and family creating a joyous and loud reception. Thus far, the crew has successfully raised more than £55,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, with plans to return to the UK after enjoying some well-deserved food and drinks.
