25 Oct
Summary
- Around 300 Odias gathered in North Carolina for Durga Puja.
- A large Durga idol was shipped from Kolkata for the festivities.
- Traditional Odia dishes and cultural performances marked the celebration.
In North Carolina, the Odia community united for a significant Durga Puja celebration, with around 300 members participating under the Carolinas chapter of the Odisha Society of the Americas. A large idol of Goddess Durga and accompanying deities was originally shipped from Kolkata in 2025 for the festivities that year and was reused for the 2026 celebration.
Volunteers played a crucial role, dedicating their efforts to erecting and decorating the puja pandal, managing registrations, and preparing traditional Odia dishes. These included 'khechudi', 'baigini', 'ghanta', and 'khiri', served as prasad to attendees. The celebration also featured lively cultural programs, including bhajan performances by adults and children, alongside traditional rituals such as 'sindoor khela' and 'dhunuchi nach'.
This initiative marks a continuation of community-organized pujas, providing a dedicated space for the Odia diaspora in North Carolina. Previously, community members attended pujas with restricted entry, prompting them to organize their own events. This year's smaller immersion idol was crafted by a teenager from the community, highlighting youthful engagement in cultural preservation.
