The Bergen County Zoo has recently expanded its diverse bird collection with the arrival of three new green araçaris. These fascinating birds, named Mango, Papaya, and Guava following a public naming event, are the smallest members of the toucan family, typically measuring 12 to 16 inches and weighing between 3.8 to 5.6 ounces.
Native to the forests of northeastern South America, including countries like Brazil and Venezuela, these araçaris are characterized by their dark green backs and vibrant bills. As frugivores, their diet consists mainly of fresh fruit, and they often forage in small groups.
The birds have adapted well to their new environment at the zoo, which was established in 1960 and is known for its extensive collection of birds and other animals. These araçaris add to the zoo's already impressive avian display, which includes bald eagles and macaws.
