Summary
- First sighting of "Tahoe Tessie" reported in 1897
- Experts attribute sightings to optical illusions caused by lake's deep, cold waters
- Pranksters recently sparked renewed interest in the monster

For over a century, residents of Lake Tahoe have sworn that a massive, serpent-like creature known as "Tahoe Tessie" resides in the depths of the lake. The first recorded sighting of the monster was in 1897, when a San Francisco native named IC Coggin described a 600-foot-long, black-and-red creature with a 14-foot-wide head and 8-inch-wide eyes.
However, experts like limnologist Dr. Charles Goldman believe these sightings are nothing more than optical illusions caused by the lake's deep, cold waters. Goldman argues that the temperature changes in the lake can produce distorted images, leading people to believe they've seen a mythical sea creature. Despite the lack of concrete evidence, the legend of Tahoe Tessie has persisted, with locals and tourists alike reporting sightings throughout the 1970s, 80s, and 90s.
In 2021, two pranksters added to the ongoing fascination with Tahoe Tessie by constructing a serpent-like head and neck out of fabric and PVC pipe, and taking it out on the lake. The stunt went viral, sparking renewed interest in the elusive monster. More recently, in 2023, an app was launched that allows users to see how climate change could affect the mythical creature, further cementing Tahoe Tessie's status as a local legend.
