Mumbai Activists Fight for Pet Rights on Carter Road

Animal enthusiasts and activists recently gathered for a silent protest at Mumbai's Carter Road, located in Bandra West. Their demonstration was a direct response to the installation of 'No Pets Allowed' signs along the seaside promenade by the Bandra Bandstand Residents Trust. Activists asserted that only an official body, such as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), possesses the legal right to issue public notices concerning pet walking or animal feeding in such areas.

During the protest, which occurred on a Saturday, participants peacefully assembled and displayed banners. Some activists also took the step of blackening several of the remaining notice boards that they deemed illegal. While acknowledging the validity of 'No Smoking' signs due to health concerns, the main focus of their demonstration was against the restrictions imposed on pets. They questioned the authority of a residents' association to enforce rules on a public space, emphasizing that all individuals have the right to enjoy the sea breeze.
