US Accents Ranked: Southern Charms Top Dating List
11 Mar
Summary
- Southern American English is voted the most attractive accent.
- Appalachian English and Philadelphia accents ranked least attractive.
- Nearly a quarter of Americans adjust their accent when dating.

A recent poll of 2,000 single Americans has unveiled which regional accents are considered most and least attractive, offering insights into how speech patterns impact dating perceptions.
Southern American English, prevalent in states like Texas and Georgia, emerged as the most appealing, followed by Louisiana's Cajun-influenced English and New York City English. At the lower end of the spectrum, Appalachian English was ranked the least attractive, with Philadelphia accents following as the second least appealing.
The survey also highlighted the emotional toll accents can take, as almost a quarter of respondents reported feeling embarrassed or judged due to their voice. Speakers of Appalachian English, in particular, voiced significant insecurity, with 42 percent feeling judged.
This pressure leads to code-switching, where individuals consciously adjust their speech to present a more favorable impression, especially in romantic settings. Experts emphasize that accents carry history and identity, advocating for their embrace rather than concealment.
