The famed Bhagavathy Amman temple, located in Mondaikad near Colachel, marked the beginning of its significant 10-day annual Koda festival. This auspicious event commenced on Sunday with the traditional 'kodiyettu' ceremony, a flag hoisting ritual that signals the festival's start. Thousands of devotees, predominantly women, were in attendance to witness the sacred proceedings.
The ceremony saw the participation of several dignitaries, including Madras high court judge L C Victoria Gowri, Kanyakumari district collector R Alagumeena, Padmanabhapuram sub-collector Vinay Kumar Meena, and Kanyakumari devaswom executive officer A Jhansi Rani. The temple flag was hoisted precisely at 8:10 AM, with the rituals guided by the temple 'tantri', Edakkode Sankaranarayana Iyer, and temple priests.
The highlight of the festival, the legendary Koda, is scheduled to take place on March 10. This event is anticipated to draw a massive crowd from various parts of Tamil Nadu and southern Kerala, underscoring the festival's regional importance and spiritual draw.
