Moncton city council has unanimously approved providing land and $1.7 million in funding for a new seniors' centre, a decision met with cheers from an audience of about 100 residents. This marks a significant step forward after 39 months of dedicated effort by a local organizing committee.
The project faced earlier setbacks, including the city repurposing a previously used centre and a potential lease falling through. However, the committee is now prepared to move forward, with hopes of breaking ground by May 1st, before the municipal election.
The new accessible and inclusive centre will be located at 80 Limerick Street on the former site of a vacant Kiwanis pool. It will focus on wellness, exercise, education, and combating social isolation, with plans to engage with local students. The city has also committed $25,000 for initial architectural costs, though additional fundraising will be necessary to cover the full construction estimate.
