The Benedictine Sisters of Mother of God Monastery, residing in Watertown, South Dakota since 1964, made a pivotal decision to reimagine their 485-acre campus. Instead of closing their doors, they embraced a generative path, transforming their home into a welcoming community. This evolution has seen the campus grow from just 29 sisters to accommodate over 120 individuals, ranging from children to the elderly.
The Village on Harmony Hill now features assisted living facilities, a childcare learning center, affordable housing options, and memory care services. The sisters aimed to create a community rooted in hospitality and welcome, ensuring meaning and purpose are central to daily life. Their efforts have not only supported the Watertown community but also provided a new way for the sisters to serve.
In recognition of their profound impact, the Benedictine Sisters were honored with the 2026 Acts of Excellence Award by the South Dakota Hall of Fame. This award celebrates their dedication to fostering a culture of excellence and their courageous initiative in creating something expansive and enduring. The sisters expressed deep satisfaction in actively contributing to the well-being of others, finding their courageous, outside-the-box approach to be deeply affirming.
