22 Dec
Summary
- Peanut, a lurcher, was found near death, weighing only 26lb 8oz.
- The RSPCA nursed Peanut back to health, rebuilding her trust.
- Over 50 applications were received to adopt the recovering dog.

A lurcher named Peanut, discovered near death on a country lane in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, has made a miraculous recovery. Weighing just 26lb 8oz, about half her ideal weight, every bone in her body was visible, and she suffered from pressure sores. The RSPCA's Block Fen Animal Centre staff believed she had a fighting chance despite her critical condition.
Under expert care, Peanut began to heal, even managing to wag her tail the morning after her rescue. Her carers provided her with warm clothing due to her lack of body fat. A significant challenge was rebuilding Peanut's trust, as she had become nervous of people due to past mistreatment.
By February, Peanut was well enough to be rehomed, attracting over 50 applications. She has now been adopted by a new family in the South West and will spend her first Christmas with them, a joyous outcome for the dog once not expected to survive the night.
