Melanie Walters, known for her role in Gavin and Stacey, has issued a strong warning after falling victim to a scam attempt twice. She was initially targeted with a suspicious email appearing to be from her bank, which she investigated and realized was fraudulent. Weeks later, she received a letter about a compromised business account, which also led her to suspect a scam, especially after noticing irregularities with a compensation offer.

Walters explained that while she did not lose any money, the scammers' knowledge of her details was unnerving. She learned from her bank that both the email and the letter were likely from the same group, employing a "long game" tactic. The actress highlighted the challenges faced by individuals over 65 in managing finances online, particularly with local bank branches closing. This experience has prompted her to partner with BT Group and AbilityNet to promote digital skills sessions for seniors.

New research indicates that over half of older adults fear becoming victims of online scams, with a significant majority desiring clear guidance. Walters emphasizes the importance of not panicking and taking time to verify any suspicious communications. She advises keeping a trusted contact number for one's bank readily available to avoid being deceived by fake contact information.
