Married At First Sight star Mel Schilling died at age 54, ten days after announcing her bowel cancer had spread to her brain. She had been diagnosed in December 2023 and urged fans to never ignore health concerns, stating, 'If I could leave you with one thing, it would be simply this: if something doesn't feel right, please get it checked out.'
Her husband confirmed her peaceful passing on March 13, 2026, surrounded by family. Schilling, a psychologist and mother-of-one, had initially ignored symptoms like constipation and fatigue, attributing them to hormonal changes. However, the cancer progressed to her lungs and brain, leaving oncologists unable to prolong her life.
Bowel cancer, also known as colon cancer, affects the large bowel. Warning signs can include persistent changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, unexplained fatigue, weight loss, or severe bloating. If the cancer spreads, symptoms can manifest in other organs, such as a persistent cough with lung metastasis or headaches with brain metastasis.
Schilling underwent chemotherapy and was eligible for a clinical trial, but ultimately, the cancer spread. Her final message emphasized the importance of health awareness, highlighting that even subtle symptoms should not be disregarded, especially as younger individuals are increasingly diagnosed.
