A striking snow pavilion, standing almost six meters tall and spanning over fifteen meters, has been erected on Clear Lake within Riding Mountain National Park. This impressive structure, crafted from ice blocks sourced directly from the lake and adorned with intricate carvings, aims to significantly enhance winter tourism in the region. Its creation is a strategic effort to extend the tourist season, supporting local businesses and amenities throughout the year by drawing visitors for a variety of winter activities.
The $30,000 project, a collaboration with Sputnik Architecture and Anvil Tree, is envisioned as a central point for winter engagement, transforming the typically quieter months into a period of excitement and activity. It's intended to be both a significant piece of public art and a functional space for hosting events. This initiative aligns with a long-standing goal to diversify visitation beyond the peak summer season, encouraging interest in unique offerings like culinary and Indigenous winter experiences.
The pavilion is set to officially open this weekend and will be a focal point for the upcoming Frost and Fire Festival from March 13 to 15. This festival will feature diverse winter activities, performances, and culinary events within the snow structure. The project seeks to attract international attention, positioning Clear Lake as a year-round destination comparable to other Manitoba attractions, reinforcing the park's appeal across all twelve months.
