Summary
- Thar OG boasts a new grille, LED lights, and wireless charging.
- Electric power steering and improved suspension enhance city driving.
- Petrol 4WD automatic version effortlessly conquered desert dunes.
Mahindra has launched the Thar OG, starting at Rs 10.32 lakh, aiming to refine its iconic 3-door SUV. Driving the updated model revealed a modernized yet still rugged off-road machine, tested in Rajasthan's highways and the Thar Desert.
The exterior receives a new 5-slat grille, circular LED headlamps with C-shaped DRLs, and 19-inch alloy wheels, adding a premium feel. Inside, upgrades include wireless charging and an engine start/stop button. Mechanically, the Thar OG features a wider track, electric power steering, and suspension from the 7XO, significantly improving low-speed maneuverability.
Engine options include a 1.5-litre diesel for efficiency, alongside more potent 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol engines. The petrol 4WD 6-speed automatic demonstrated immense power in desert dunes, aided by its electronic locking rear differential.
However, traditional body-on-frame limitations remain. Rough roads can lead to suspension thuds, and wind noise becomes noticeable above 80-90 km/h. Rear seat access is awkward, and boot space is minimal, necessitating luggage on rear seats for longer trips. The petrol variant's fuel economy averages 8-9 km/litre, and top variants lack features like automatic climate control.
Mahindra justifies some feature omissions by emphasizing an engaging, hands-on driving experience. Despite its historical reputation, the Thar OG stands out as an emotional purchase, unmatched in presence and significantly improved for daily driving, while remaining unstoppable off-road.
