Lulu's Courage: Addiction Battle & Recovery Awards

Singer Lulu is preparing to address the Scottish Recovery Awards in Glasgow, an event focused on drug and alcohol awareness. The 77-year-old artist, who achieved fame in 1964 with her hit "Shout," has been publicly candid about her past struggles with alcoholism.

Lulu, who has maintained sobriety for over ten years, will share her experiences at the event on October 9. She plans to discuss the profound harm substances can cause and highlight the "courage, commitment and support" vital for recovery. Lulu entered rehab in 2013, a step she took after recognizing herself as a functioning alcoholic.

The singer, originally named Marie Lawrie, grew up in Glasgow and initially kept her addiction private. She emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and celebrating individuals who have successfully overcome their dependencies. "Recovery is possible," she stated, expressing her honor in participating in the awards.

Paul Bowley, chief executive of organizers Abbeycare, expressed excitement about Lulu's keynote participation, noting her role in making the inaugural Scottish Recovery Awards a memorable occasion. He acknowledged Scotland's ongoing challenges with drug and alcohol-related harm and stressed the significance of recognizing those dedicated to saving lives.

Abbeycare, a recovery clinic provider, established these awards to mark its 20th anniversary. Nominations for the Scottish Recovery Awards remain open until August 14 and can be submitted via the event's website.
