Out Together, an LGBTQ+ support group established in 2020, is set to make history this week by becoming the first LGBTQ+ organization to host a stand at the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate. The charity was founded with funds left by Mike Potter, a North Yorkshire farmer who found immense relief in coming out at the age of 72.
Graham Clarke, a close friend of Potter, expressed that the group's existence during Mike's lifetime could have provided a crucial safe space. Out Together specifically aims to combat social isolation and loneliness, with a particular focus on older generations within rural and farming communities. These communities can present unique challenges and conservative cultural norms that may deter individuals from coming out.
Trustee Tim Gittins highlighted the Great Yorkshire Show as a significant opportunity to raise awareness and address the additional barriers faced by those in rural settings. He noted that many worry about isolation and having no one to talk to if they come out. The show's director, Rachel Coates, welcomed Out Together, emphasizing the event's inclusivity of all people within farming, food, and countryside communities.
