1 Mar
Summary
- Marcus, a black labrador, was reclassified from guide dog training to a therapy dog.
- He excels as a therapy dog due to his affectionate and polite nature.
- Marcus now provides comfort at a cancer care and rehabilitation center.

Marcus, a four-year-old black labrador, initially underwent training with Guide Dogs NSW in Australia, with the aspiration of becoming a guide dog for individuals with low vision or blindness. Despite mastering basic commands, Marcus was noted for his "unwillingness to work" and a tendency to be "a bit slow" and "a sloth with a low drive to work." Consequently, after 14 months of training, he was reclassified rather than rejected.
His "career path change" led him to become a therapy dog, a role for which he is exceptionally well-suited due to his affectionate, friendly, and polite temperament. In 2022, Marcus was matched with Dr. Lina Pugliano, an oncologist and founder of the Cancer Fit rehabilitation center.
Marcus now works alongside Dr. Pugliano at Cancer Fit, offering comfort to patients undergoing cancer treatment. He instinctively provides support to those who are upset, resting his head on their legs or offering gentle affection. His presence is a vital source of comfort in the clinic.
