A unique culinary venture is bringing vibrant Indian flavors to an unexpected venue in La Ronge, Saskatchewan. Kay's Kitchen, operating out of the Mel Hegland Uniplex, offers a surprising menu featuring butter chicken and biryani, alongside typical arena staples like burgers and fries. Kamalpreet Kaur Dhillon, the mastermind behind the kitchen, relocated from India in 2017 and established her business within the arena in November 2025.
Dhillon's journey to La Ronge was serendipitous, initially planning a brief stay as a teaching assistant. Her culinary enterprise began modestly, selling food from her home after a student expressed interest in Indian cuisine. Encouraged by arena staff, she expanded her offerings, eventually embracing traditional rink foods to cater to a broader audience. The menu now boasts approximately 65 items, including vegan and halal options, all prepared from scratch by Dhillon.
The success of Kay's Kitchen has been a welcome surprise, with local residents forming the core of its dedicated clientele. The blend of cultures is even reflected in the kitchen's logo, featuring an Indian peacock and a wolf representing the former local hockey team. Dhillon, who initially found the distance from Toronto daunting, now feels at home in La Ronge and has no plans to leave.
