22 Mar
Summary
- A Detroit woman received food and dignity during hardship.
- This experience inspired her to join a major food rescue organization.
- She now runs her own nonprofit for children's holiday gifts.

Krista Poole's journey from personal crisis to philanthropic leadership began during the 2007-09 recession. After losing her job in real estate, she experienced profound hardship, including a disheartening visit to a human service agency. However, a transformative encounter at a Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit, where she received nutritious food from Forgotten Harvest with dignity and respect, provided a crucial turning point.
This act of kindness and support profoundly impacted Poole, inspiring her to learn more about Forgotten Harvest. She eventually joined the organization, initially as an executive assistant and later as a community liaison, driven by her own lived experience with food insecurity. Now, as a senior logistics manager for Forgotten Harvest, she oversees efforts that reach hundreds of community partners.
Poole's commitment to giving back extends beyond her role at Forgotten Harvest. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she founded Krista's Unique Boutique to support her passion for design. The profits from this venture allowed her to launch her own nonprofit, Krista Kares, which provides Christmas gifts to local students. Initially helping three families, her youngest son's suggestion led to adopting an entire school, a mission that has grown through community support.
