Summary
- A group of 12 volunteers create knitted toppers for town landmarks.
- The displays have themes ranging from seasons to national celebrations.
- Recent theft of nine toppers did not deter the dedicated group.
A dedicated group of 12 volunteers in Higham Ferrers, known as the Higham Ferrers Yarn Bomb Group, are bringing cheer to their community with vibrant knitted toppers. Since December 2020, they have transformed town landmarks with seasonal displays, recently showcasing themes of cricket, flowers, picnics, and Wimbledon. These artistic creations now stretch along the High Street, from Market Square to the Co-op.
The group, which has grown from three to twelve members, manages not only the creation but also the maintenance and storage of the toppers. Their displays have previously celebrated numerous themes, including Christmas, Remembrance Day, VE Day, VJ Day, the King's Coronation, and the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Feedback indicates the toppers significantly boost morale and community connection.
Despite experiencing the theft of nine toppers last year, which caused considerable upset, the group remains undeterred. The recovered items did not diminish their enthusiasm for creating art that adds a unique touch to Higham Ferrers. The group actively seeks new members and meets monthly at the Higham Ferrers Community Library and Wellbeing Hub.
