3 Mar
Summary
- Kenora's homelessness count nears 200, with rising shelter demand.
- Northern Ontario sees over 37% homelessness increase in one year.
- Extended shelter hours secured until April 2028.
Nearly 200 individuals are currently experiencing homelessness in Kenora, Ontario, according to a recent point-in-time count. The Kenora District Service Board reported 64 unsheltered people and 127 individuals utilizing emergency shelters, jail, or treatment centres.
The Kenora Emergency Shelter has seen increasing occupancy, prompting the KDSB to secure extended funding for its operations until April 2028. This ensures overnight shelter access from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. daily, with the co-located Clinical Service Hub offering weekday support.
This initiative addresses a critical rise in homelessness in northern Ontario, which has outpaced provincial increases. The hub model aims to streamline access to mental health, addiction, employment, and housing services, reducing the need for individuals to repeatedly share their circumstances.
Recent reports indicate a significant housing shortage in Kenora, projected to worsen by 2031. Affordability remains a key concern, with available units often out of reach for residents. The shelter is currently appealing for donations of essential items like socks and toiletries.
