The Kedarnath Temple, set to reopen on April 22, 2026, will reveal the sacred Shivling after its winter protection. This involves the unique Bhishma Shringar ritual, also known as Bhishma Seva, performed just before the temple closes around November each year. Priests meticulously apply approximately six liters of pure cow ghee to the Shivling, forming a substantial protective layer. This is then covered with a white cotton cloth and sealed, creating a natural shield against the extreme winter conditions.
During winter, Kedarnath faces temperatures as low as -10°C to -20°C, with snowfall reaching up to 15-20 feet. The ghee coating acts as insulation, preserving the Shivling through months of snow, ice, and potential avalanches, ensuring its integrity despite the harsh Himalayan climate. This method differs significantly from other temples that simply close their doors.
The ritual derives its name from Bhishma of the Mahabharata, renowned for his endurance while lying on a bed of arrows. This tradition mirrors his strength and resilience, linking mythology with temple practices. On April 22, priests will remove the Bhishma Shringar covering between 7 am and 8 am amidst Vedic chants, unveiling the Shivling to devotees.
This practice highlights faith and continuity amidst extreme conditions, symbolizing Lord Shiva's enduring presence and protection throughout the severe Himalayan winters. The ritual gained further prominence after the 2013 floods, when the temple miraculously withstood widespread regional damage.
