A kangaroo named Chesney made an improbable escape from Sunshine Farm in Necedah, Wisconsin, last Wednesday. Spooked by stray dogs, the 16-month-old marsupial leaped over an eight-foot fence, embarking on a three-day adventure. His keeper, Debbie Marland, along with friends and community members, initiated an extensive search effort that spanned the small town and its surroundings.
The search involved significant effort, with Marland reporting approximately 37,000 steps daily. The team utilized heat-seeking drones to narrow down Chesney's location, proving effective in tracking the agile escapee. Despite eluding searchers on Friday night, Chesney was eventually coaxed out from a wooded area on Saturday morning.
Chesney was safely reunited with his keeper, Stacy Brereton, who approached him calmly and offered familiar scents and comforting voices. Though tired and hungry, Chesney was found to be in good health and will receive a veterinary checkup. A new mesh top is planned for the enclosure to prevent future escapes, and a children's book about Chesney's escapade is in development.
