The West Express Ginga, operated by JR West, has recommenced its summer services, providing passengers with unique travel experiences through Japan's Wakayama Prefecture. This scenic train typically runs on three routes, but during the summer months, it focuses on shuttling passengers between Kyoto and Shingu, offering both daytime and overnight journeys.
The train traverses the mountainous Wakayama Prefecture, an area renowned for its ancient pilgrimage trails, sacred temple towns, and coastal hot spring resorts. To enhance the passenger experience, the West Express Ginga makes extended stops, allowing travelers to book short excursions at an additional cost. These optional activities include sampling local delicacies like ramen near Wakayama station or enjoying sushi at Kaina station.
Passengers can choose from various seating and accommodation options. Standard tickets are available, as well as upper-class 'green car' tickets from 11,450 yen, which include private compartments that convert into beds and access to a private lounge in carriage number one. Family compartments are also available, designed to accommodate up to four passengers with a spacious bench seat that extends into a mattress.
Additional amenities include washrooms, communal free spaces with diverse seating arrangements, and wheelchair-accessible facilities. For female passengers, there is a dedicated section with reclining seats and a changing room. The summer season for the West Express Ginga began on July 3 and will continue until September 30. Specific schedules include overnight express services from Kyoto/Osaka to Shingu on Mondays and Fridays, and daytime express trains from Shingu to Osaka/Kyoto on Wednesdays and Sundays. Tickets go on sale one month prior to the operating day.
