India's Snake Village: Where Cobras Live Freely

Shetphal, a village in Maharashtra's Solapur district, is known as India's Snake Village due to its unique relationship with cobras. Located about 200 km southeast of Pune, the village has cultivated an identity centered on coexistence with snakes, deviating from common fears. Residents have long accepted snakes as normal inhabitants, a practice deeply rooted in local traditions.

This remarkable integration is evident in daily life, where each home contains a dedicated 'devasthanam,' an alcove providing a resting space for snakes. Villagers hold a deep reverence for these reptiles, linking them to Nag deities and Lord Shiva. This respect is a cultural legacy, particularly highlighted during Nag Panchami, a festival celebrating snake worship, showcasing a culture built on acceptance rather than apprehension.
